The job of cleaning mold ideally needs to be done by a professional. Mold spreads itself through small
spores that float around and take root where ever they end up. Once mold starts producing spores, it is most
likely that they will be blown all over your house through heating and venting ducts.
Mold usually grows in damp places. But it can take root in dryer places such as carpets and furniture. We
most often see mold in bathrooms.
Cleaning mold is a difficult task since its spores are not visible by the human eye. So it is important to
stick to a cleaning schedule. I mentioned that cleaning mold needs to be done by a professional but most of us
can't afford the thousands of dollars it will take. So let's look at some tips to get rid of mold.
1. Use a respirator with a cartridge certified for mold and spores. Using a regular face
mask or organic filter is like not using protection at all. Organic filters are most often used for chemicals.
Biological filters are used for molds and spores.
2. Wear clothing to protect all of your body. Don't leave any body part exposed. The tiny
mold spores can attach to your skin. Be careful after you have finished cleaning. Taking off your mask and
clothing will cause these spores to be released in to the air which you will end up inhaling.
3. After you have finished cleaning an area, trying putting a space heater facing that
area to dry it. Mold thrives on dampness so keep things as dry as possible. You should also open all of your
windows to let fresh air in the house.
4. Never leave wet clothing or towels lying around. That is a recipe for mold growth. If
your wet items are waiting to be washed, leave them outside in the sun or hang them until ready.
